Description
Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) Control Module: This is the electronic brain of the VW ABS system. It receives signals from the wheel speed sensors on each wheel. Here’s what it does:
-
- Interprets data: It analyzes the wheel speed data to identify if a wheel is about to lock up during hard braking.
- Controls the ABS pump: If a lockup is imminent, the module sends instructions to the ABS pump.
- Modulates braking pressure: The ABS pump rapidly builds and releases pressure in the brake line going to the locking wheel, preventing it from completely stopping and maintaining some rotation for steering control.
-
Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM): In some VW models, the ABS functionalities might be integrated into a more comprehensive Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM). This EBCM would not only manage the ABS but also other electronic brake functions like:
- Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD): This system distributes braking force between the front and rear wheels for optimal stopping power and stability.
- Traction Control System (TCS): This system helps prevent wheelspin during acceleration on slippery surfaces by reducing engine power or applying brake force to specific wheels.
